A LITTLE BIT ABOUT FOSTERING
Our dogs come straight from the greyhound trainers' kennels to a vet to be desexed. They may spend one night with one of the Homeward Bound Hound coordinators or will go straight to one of our foster carers. We do our best to learn a bit about the dogs prior arrival, but it is not always possible, depending on where they are coming from.

Generally, when one of our carers gets a new dog, it's the first time that dog has ever set foot in a house. They can be frightened and anxious, and pretty worn out from their surgery. So the first several days can bring almost anything as the foster carer is getting to know the dog, helping them calm and get used to an incredibly different environment than they've experienced before. It can be a difficult, frustrating (sleeping on the couch!), but can also be incredibly rewarding. Occasionally you get dogs that make the transition much more easily than others. Whatever the temperament of the dog though, your role as a foster carer is focused on teaching the greyhound the basic skills, and helping them learn how to be a pet, so that they can then be re-homed with a family.

And most importantly, you will be supported throughout the process!

(If you are after a permanent new member of the family, please head over to the Adoption application. It will always include a trial period! https://forms.gle/zaE4zq4QqKeEzP266)

YOUR LIFESTYLE
Who else lives in your home, and what is their relationship to you (please include children, including their ages)?
Your answer
What does a typical week look like for your family? What are your typical work / school / social patterns? Is there any alone time for the foster hound? If so, can you make arrangements if it was longer?
Your answer
Do you and your family have previous experience with dogs/ rescue dogs? Tell us about it.
Your answer
Do you currently have any other pets?  How are they with other dogs (e.g. if you have a cat, does it have experience with dogs? Is it more likely to stand its ground or run?)?

FOSTERING A GREYHOUND
We will guide you through your foster experience. We usually set up a group chat to help you with any questions you have. We will pre-select suitable adopters and will ask you for your input to whether you think they can provide the right home for your foster greyhound. We strongly encourage communication between foster carer and adopters throughout the process.
Why do you want to foster greyhounds?
Your answer
As the greyhounds come straight out of the kennel, the first few days of fostering can be a little more work. Ideally there is very little alone time and you teach the greyhound how to be alone (with our guidance). You might need to provide more frequent toilet breaks in the beginning to teach them where their new "bathroom" is. Are you prepared to handle this?
Clear selection
One of our biggest requirement is to keep the greyhound's world super small in the first days and weeks and only incrementally open the world up to her/him. This means: Starting off with super short walks around the block, no dog parks and no café or pub outings. Are you happy to offer this to the foster greyhound to set them up for success?
Clear selection
Depending on the dogs, current "times in foster" can be anywhere between 2 weeks to a few weeks. Are you happy to commit to this?

YOUR HOME
Do you live in a house, apartment, townhouse, or other?
Your answer
Are there any stairs in your home? How many, what type? If there are any, are you prepared to teach the greyhound to work them out (with our guidance)?
Your answer
Do you have a balcony, garden or courtyard, and if so, is it securely fenced? How high are the fences?
Your answer
Where will the dog be when you are at home and when you are not at home? Where will the dog sleep at night?
Your answer
Do you have a car (for pick ups/vet visits)?
