Rising 7th Grade Elective Registration 2020-2021
After talking with your parents, please review the electives and their descriptions.  In order of preference, please select three elective choices.  Then, choose three alternatives. Keep in mind that your top choice classes might fill, so pick alternate classes that you are interested in. The teachers’ emails are listed in the course description if you have additional questions.

REQUIRED: Health and PE Grade 7: At least one semester of PE is required for all students.  All students will be assigned PE for one of their elective classes, meeting 45 minutes each day.  This course will include a health curriculum that is a mandatory part of Healthful Living courses. mac.anderson@bcsemail.org and  justin.clarke@bcsemail.org

CAREER AND TECHNICAL EDUCATION:

_____Exploring Nutrition and Wellness Grade 7 (semester): This class is based on a module program with an emphasis on Nutrition/Wellness. Students will engage in activities such as food labs, food truck and/or MyPlate group project, nutrition awareness, kitchen safety, and sanitation, etc. Students will also be engaged in life skills tasks, such as hand washing dishes, laundry, cooking, cleaning, etc. This class helps students develop positive relationships with others, as students learn skills necessary for real life situations. _____PLTW Gateway to Technology – Design and Modeling Grade 7 (semester):  This course features a project-based curriculum that covers basic mechanical concepts, advanced product design and drafting.  Students will be exposed to the modules including design and modeling.  

_____ PLTW Computer Science for Innovators and Makers Grade 7 (semester): Students will be using block coding to create, download and upload programs to a micro:bit microcontroller. Students will also design and develop a safe to protect valuable possessions, a wearable safety device to be used at night, an art installation to improve a community space, or a mechanical dispenser for an animal/person who needs assistance to retrieve an object.  Teamwork, problem solving, and technology are highly encouraged throughout the course. rebeccad.smith@bcsemail.org


WORLD LANGUAGE:

_____Beginning Exploratory Language Grade 7 - Spanish (semester):  Open to students who are new to the Spanish language. In this course, emphasis is placed on Spanish and developing an extensive real life vocabulary, grammar, and descriptive phrases.  Students will study music, culture, geography, and crafts through a variety of creative hands-on activities.   didier.rubio@bcsemail.org

_____Intermediate Exploratory Language Grade 7 - Spanish (semester):  Students must have completed Beginning Spanish to enroll in this course. In this course, students will continue to develop an extensive real life vocabulary, grammar, and descriptive phrases.  It is a continuation of Beginning Exploratory Spanish, with an emphasis on grammar. Students will study music, culture, geography, foods, and crafts through a variety of creative hands-on activities.   didier.rubio@bcsemail.org

ARTS:

_____Band Grade 7 (year): (Must have completed 6th grade Band with a C average or higher and must commit to the entire year). Seventh grade band is a continuation of instrumental study, utilizing more challenging musical concepts and "technically difficult” music.  Students will use the second level of Essential Elements 2000 and participate in the band karate pass off system. Students are encouraged to participate in jazz band/stage band, All County, All District, and All State clinics, as well as solo & ensemble competitions.  Students will be exposed to numerous musical styles: Classical, Jazz, Rock, Latin, etc... Students should also know that the difficulty of time signature, scales, and rhythms will increase.  This class will require attendance at concerts and festivals on and /or off campus.  cw.dodson@bcsemail.org

_____Creative Dramatics Grade 7 (semester):  This is an intermediate to advanced approach to the theater arts.  Students will use movement, voice, writing and improvisation to develop characters for performance. Through modern media of stage, radio, and video performances, students will communicate ideas and feelings using problem solving skills and technology.  They will study theater arts in relation to geography, culture, and history of modern societies from the emergence of the First Global Age (1450) to the present.    ellen.wharton@bcsemail.org

_____Orchestra Grade 7 (semester):  (Must have completed 6th grade Strings). This course includes group instruction on orchestral stringed instruments with a focus on performance.  At the conclusion of the semester, students will perform a concert.  This course also includes music history.  samuel.lyons@bcsemail.org

_____Visual Art Grade 7 (semester):  The primary focus will be to incorporate the elements and principles of art within students’ original artwork with an emphasis on 3-D design. Students will continue to learn about various artists, techniques, and periods throughout history.  Students will write about, critique, and compare and contrast works of art to their own.  Projects may include: Clay Animal Jugs, Paper Architecture, Painting, Design and Compositions Projects, Wire Sculpture, Interior Design, Printmaking Oil Pastels, Art History PowerPoints focusing on three influential artists.  matthew.pospishil@bcsemail.org 

_____Vocal Music Grade 7 (semester):  This class is open to any student who shows an interest in singing.  It is designed for all ability levels and introduces basic vocal technique, beginning music theory and sight-singing through games and cooperative activities.  Students will sing a variety of music from the classics to modern music (Sacred, Secular, Folk, Patriotic, Ballads, etc.).  The seventh grade chorus will perform at least one concert per semester.  Students will review and learn to read basic symbols that are required/needed to sing music and will be introduced to basic theory and some music history.  Students will learn to sing in unison, two, and three parts and will be required to attend a concert at the end of the semester.  kathryn.strickler@bcsemail.org 

_____Vocal Music Grade 7 Honors (year):  (Students who have passed 6th grade chorus are eligible for this group, along with students selected by audition). This course is offered to students who show an interest in excelling in vocal music.  Singing in multiple parts, rounds, advanced theory, and sight singing are explored. Students will sing a more advanced literature of various genres (Sacred, Secular, Folk, Patriotic, Ballads, etc.).  Students in this class will have the opportunity to participate in Honors Chorus, All County Chorus, All State Chorus, State Choral Festivals, and other events throughout the year.  This class will require attendance at concerts and festivals on or off campus.  kathryn.strickler@bcsemail.org
