Student Feedback on Repeal and Replace of DEI Efforts in North Carolina.
Last week, the NC legislature stated that at the moment, they would not enact legislation to eliminate DEI efforts across the UNC System, allowing the Board of Governors to take charge of the topic. Text of this News&Observer article  https://apple.news/AzdnLDuFPTDGPX5TpGj5Kew is included at the end of this email. (Apologies for the apple.news link, I don’t have a subscription to the N&O)

Tuesday afternoon (April 16th), the BOG attached Agenda Itema A-3 (the last three pages) to Wednesday's agenda, proposing the repealing of Section 300.8.5 of the UNC Policy Manual, Policy on Diversity and Inclusion Within the University of North Carolina, and Section 300.8.5[R] of the UNC Policy Manual, Regulation on Diversity and Inclusion Within the University of North Carolina, and supersedes them with the Equality Within the University of North Carolina policy.  On Wednesday, this policy change was swiftly adopted by the Committee on University Governance without substantial discussion (again, text of the article included below).  The code change is expected to be finalized by the full BOG next month.  Our Chancellors will be compelled to report our swift compliance to the Board of Governors.

Student Feedback on this important issue is valuable, necessary and TIME SENSITIVE. University representatives will be meeting with President Hans next week and need ALL feedback by Monday, April 22nd to create a report.

If you would like to participate in this important initiative, SGA will need your feedback by Monday evening. Your feedback should discuss why Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) efforts on NC university campuses are valuable, how you or your peers have benefitted from DEI offices (the UNCA multicultural center) and related DEI initiatives, and how/why you think DEI employees and initiatives benefit public, N.C.  universities.
