Morning: Experiential Learning Session
On Wednesday, August 24, from 8:30am-12:30 pm, you will have the opportunity to participate in an in-depth experiential learning session. There are seven different options for sessions. Please review the descriptions below and then rank your choices. (Every effort will be made to give students their first choice, however, some sessions do have limited spots available and may not be able to accommodate everyone who requests them.)

Spartan Scavenger Hunt
Meet your new teammates and race against other teams of new students as you learn more about campus history and traditions. Put all of the knowledge you’ve gained about University of Dubuque the last two days to the test to solve clues, navigate to campus locations, and compete for prizes! Presented by the Office of Advancement and Alumni Engagement.

Army ROTC and National Guard Challenge
Are you up for the challenge? Join members of the UD ROTC Panther Battalion and the Iowa National Guard and expand your leadership, problem-solving, and teamwork skills. Make it to the top of the rock climbing tower, test your skills in the jousting pit, and learn more about the specialized equipment used by the National Guard.

Blackademics
Join us in this safe space to explore racial equity and college success for students of color. Engage and interact with peers through discussion and sharing stories. Meet current students of color and hear their insights into the college experience. Connect with campus and community leaders of color to build your resource network.

Deep Dive Dubuque
Learn more about UD’s home town! The City of Dubuque is a destination location in the tri-state region. Its proximity to the Mississippi River has given it a unique history. Hop aboard the Dubuque Trolleys for a tour of the area, ride the world’s shortest and steepest railroad, and explore the Mississippi River Museum and Aquarium.

Ropes Course
Overcome obstacles and challenges as a team solving puzzles and navigating the low ropes. Push yourself to the next level with high ropes elements like a zip line and giant swing. This session will be both a team and personal challenge, so bring your sense of adventure! Dress comfortably and bring your water bottle as you will be outdoors for this session. Sunscreen and bug spray will be provided.

Stewardship at Mines of Spain State Recreation Area
An important part of the University of Dubuque’s Mission is stewardship – taking care of something that does not belong to you. In this session, we will show stewardship for the natural world as we work to beautify trails in the Mines of Spain State Recreation Area. The Mines of Spain, a site of historical importance located just minutes from campus, is filled with a variety of animals and plants and offers splendid views of the Mississippi River and surrounding ecosystems. Presented by members of the University of Dubuque’s Web of Life student group. Dress comfortably and bring your water bottle as you will be outdoors for this session. Sunscreen and bug spray will be provided.

Please rank the Experiential Learning Session options, with 1 being your most preferred option, and 7 being your least preferred option. *
