ABSTRACT:
“The energy transition is a momentous challenge, requiring the best and brightest minds with diverse skills and backgrounds. This discussion will highlight a first-of-a-kind energy storage system developed by Malta, Inc. using molten salt technology as its energy storage medium. It is a long duration energy storage system that will enable the decarbonization of the electric sector globally. A fossil-free energy future requires technologies like Malta’s that provide synchronous and dependable energy when it’s needed, much like fossil plants do today. The Malta technology can enable coal repurposing and provide cities with district heating opportunities due to the natural heat extraction as part of its energy generating process. The Malta team is engineering this first-of-a-kind solution to provide the momentum necessary to enable the energy transition. Even so, the energy transition is not just about solving a technology or engineering challenge. To be successful we must address the political and regulatory barriers, the need for energy security, the need for affordable and accessible clean energy, the workforce, and the need to make substantial investments in green infrastructure. It will require a psychological shift and a continued commitment to advance the types of technologies and assets we will rely upon in the future. All of which is to say, it’s a human undertaking. My presentation will also highlight how the energy transition needs more than exceptional technology; it will require exceptional people with diverse backgrounds and skillsets. The energy transition needs everyone which is why your superpower matters.”
