ECE Research Seminar Registration

Presentation 1: Cyber-Physical-Human Systems

SpeakerDr. Liang Cheng is a Professor and Chair of the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science (about 700 undergraduate, Master’s, and Ph.D. students majoring in CS, CSE, and/or EE on 2 campuses) at the University of Toledo. His latest research focuses on CPHS (Cyber-Physical-Human Systems) and is geared toward enabling intelligent infrastructure based on the convergence of real-time sensing, model-driven data analytics, and machine learning through interdisciplinary projects. He has been involved as the PI (Principal Investigator) or a Co-PI in research teams for DOT and DOE centers (~$26MM) and more than 20 research and education projects funded by a variety of sources, including the NSF, DOT, DOE, DARPA, Pennsylvania Infrastructure Technology Alliance, and industry partners.

Presentation 2: Electromagnetic-Plasma Interactions: Fundamental Science and Emerging Applications

Speaker: Dr. Abbas Semnani is an Associate Professor in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at UToledo, where he serves as the PI of the “Adaptive Radiofrequency and Plasma Lab (ARPL).” He spent seven years at Purdue University before joining UToledo in 2019 with extensive research on high-frequency discharges and electromagnetic-plasma interactions. He received the 2019 IEEE MTT-S “Tatsuo Itoh” award and the NASA Glenn Faculty Fellowship in 2022. His research interests focus on applied electromagnetics and plasmas, with specific applications in reconfigurable RF electronics, tunable and small antennas, high-power microwaves, plasma medicine, and plasma propulsion.

Presentation 3: Advanced Topics in Power Electronics and Cyber Security

SpeakersDr. Raghav Khanna received the B.S., M.S., and Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh, PA, USA in 2007, 2010, and 2014, respectively. Raghav has worked for several industries including Lockheed Martin (Philadelphia, PA), PPG Industries (Pittsburgh, PA) and HRL Laboratories (Malibu CA). In 2015, he joined the electrical engineering and computer science department at The University of Toledo. He is currently an Associate Professor and holds the position of Leidich Family Endowed Professor in Power and Energy Systems. He recently received grants from the U.S. DoD, DoE, and NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory to further develop his research activities. Dr. Ahmad Y. Javaid received his B.Tech. (Hons.) Degree in Computer Engineering from Aligarh Muslim University, India in 2008, and Ph.D. degree from The University of Toledo in 2015 along with the prestigious University Fellowship Award. He joined the EECS Department as an Assistant Professor in Fall 2015 and is the founding director of the Paul A. Hotmer Family Cybersecurity and Teaming Research (CSTAR) lab. His research expertise is cyber security of drone networks, smartphones, wireless sensor networks, and other systems. He is also conducting extensive research on human-machine teams and applications of AI and machine learning to power grids operation, smart grid attack detection and mitigation.

Presentation 4: Development of Intelligent Energy Management System Using Natural Computing

Speaker: Dr. Devinder Kaur is a professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science Engineering at the University of Toledo. She received her Ph. D. degree and MS degree in Computer Engineering from Wayne State University. She is a recipient of Thomas Rumble Fellowship, Commonwealth Fellowship and Panjab University Medal. Dr. Kaur had summer Faculty Fellowships at NASA Glenn, AFRL Dayton and Daimler Chrysler. She was awarded the Fulbright Senior Specialist award. Her research interests are Nature Inspired Computing, Machine Learning, Deep Neural Networks, Data analytics, Fuzzy logic modelling for Intelligent Engineering Applications.
