All 8th Grade students at McAuliffe International School are required to take English Language Arts, Math, Science, Social Studies, an Engineering elective, an Art elective and a World Language. See below for information on 8th grade Physical Education classes. Please select your student's first and second choice for their Art, World Language, and Engineering electives.

Submitted forms for new students are due May 3rd. Students who submit their form by the due date will have a much greater chance of receiving their first elective request in their final schedule. This form can only be submitted once and students cannot request a change from their original selections, so choose carefully!

Art Elective First Choice- Choose One *

Visual Arts- 8- Reflect, Create, & Justify your use of art techniques & self expression, using your artwork as a vehicle for social change in response to current movements (no experience necessary).

Theater- 8- Master acting skills through two large-scale performances.

Vocal Music- Do you like to sing and make music with your voice? Develop skills and learn how to create beautiful music with your voice.

Beginner Band- This class is for any student who wants to learn a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument. No prior experience is required. We will start from the beginning. Renting an instrument from a reputable music store is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as the use of a school instrument is reserved for our students with the highest need. Instruments that students can play in this class include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Percussion students (only 5-6 are selected for percussion) are expected to learn multiple percussion instruments, including the xylophone. At home practice is an expectation for this class.

Intermediate Band- This class is for any student who has played their instrument in a concert band setting for 1-2 years. No audition is required but students should be able to read and perform basic eighth, quarter, half, and whole note rhythms using the notes in their concert Bb major scale. Renting an instrument from a reputable music store is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as the use of a school instrument is reserved for our students with the highest need. Instruments that students can play in this class include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Percussion students (only 5-6 are selected for percussion) are expected to play multiple percussion instruments, including the xylophone. At home practice is an expectation for this class.

Advanced Band- This is an auditioned class for our top students who have been playing their instrument for 2+ years. Students should not sign up for this class unless they have been selected by Mr. Dwyer. Students in this class are expected to be able to play with about a 2 octave range on their instrument with advanced rhythms including 16th notes, in various time signatures including 6/8 time. If you believe you meet the requirements for this class, please contact Mr. Dwyer for an audition. Renting an instrument from a reputable music store is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as the use of a school instrument is reserved for our students with the highest need. Instruments that students can play in this class include flute, oboe, bassoon, clarinet, saxophone, french horn, trombone, baritone/euphonium, tuba, and percussion. Percussion students (only 5-6 are selected for percussion) are expected to play multiple percussion instruments, including the xylophone. At home practice is an expectation for this class.

Beginner Orchestra (Strings Instruments)- This class is for any student who wants to learn a string orchestra instrument. No prior experience is required. We will start from the beginning. Renting an instrument from a reputable music store is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as the use of a school instrument is reserved for our students with the highest need. Instruments that students can play in this class include violin, viola, cello, and bass. At home practice is an expectation for this class.

Intermediate Orchestra- This class is for any student who has played their instrument in an orchestra setting for 1-2 years. No audition is required but students should be able to read and perform basic eighth, quarter, half, and whole note rhythms using the notes in their D and G major scale. Renting an instrument from a reputable music store is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as the use of a school instrument is reserved for our students with the highest need. Instruments that students can play in this class include violin, viola, cello, and bass. At home practice is an expectation for this class.

Advanced Orchestra- This is an auditioned class for our top students who have been playing their instrument for 2+ years. Jazz Band (when selecting this elective, please read through the entire course description and answer the two follow up questions later in this form)- This is an auditioned class for students who have been playing their instrument for 1+ years. Students should not sign up for this class unless they have been selected by Mr. Dwyer. Students in this class are expected to also participate in one of the other bands or orchestras, unless given an exemption by Mr. Dwyer. If you would like to audition, please contact Mr. Dwyer. Renting an instrument from a reputable music store is HIGHLY RECOMMENDED, as the use of a school instrument is reserved for our students with the highest need. Standard instruments for this class include (but are not limited to) saxophone, trumpet, trombone, piano, guitar, bass, and drumset. At home practice is an expectation for this class.

Spanish 1A (Beginner)- For students who have never taken Spanish before.

Spanish 1B (Intermediate)- For students who took Beginner Spanish in 7th grade.

Spanish 2A (Advanced)- For students who took Intermediate Spanish in 7th grade.

Spanish 2B (Fluent)- For students who speak Spanish as their primary language at home or who have a recommendation from their current Spanish teacher to take 2B. Students need to REQUEST that their teacher email their counselor with their recommendation to 2B.

French 1A (Beginner)- For students who have never taken French before.

French 1B (Intermediate)- For students who took French 1A in 7th Grade.

French 2A (Advanced)- For students who took French 1B in 7th Grade.

Fluent French- This class requires an additional cost. Please email your counselor/grade level AP if you are interested in taking this class.

Mandarin 1A (Beginner)- For students who have never taken Mandarin before.

Mandarin 1B (Intermediate)- For students who took Mandarin 1A in 7th Grade.

Mandarin 2A (Advanced)- For students who took Mandarin 1B in 7th Grade.

Mandarin 2B (Fluent)- For students who have taken all Mandarin levels offered at McAuliffe AND have discussed this option with their current Mandarin teacher

Design and Engineering *

Computer Science- learn how to write code, design websites and create your own apps.

Advanced Construction Arts (Students who have taken the introductory to construction arts will be given priority enrollment in this class).

PE Option- 8th Grade students have the opportunity of "opting out" of PE and starting school either their Red or White Days at 9:20. Please be aware, bus transportation will not be provided for the later start time and students will not be allowed on school property until 9:15 on their late start days. *

No Opt Out- My student WILL take PE and will start school daily at 8:00 am

Yes Opt Out- My student will NOT take PE and we are aware and I understand that every other day my child will not be eligible for bus transportation and will not be allowed on school property prior to 9:15 am.
