As many things have changed with the COVID-19 pandemic, one thing that has not changed is GCCA's commitment to our Griffins Athletic Teams. Last year, at this time we had our first Griffin's Athletic Night where we showcased the Athletic Program, met the coaches and planned for the fall season. We are unable to do that at this time but are moving forward and planning for a fall sports season. It may look different from last year's season. There may be changes to come that we are unaware of, but we will take those as they come and strive to be a Light to all the World through athletics. In order to plan accordingly, I need to know the interest level for each sport. I understand this is not a contract we are asking you to sign, however, if there isn't enough interest at this time for certain sports, then we might not be able to offer them. Please respond if you are a definite yes and email me if you are a MAYBE.
Last year we offered Middle School Co-Ed Soccer for 5-8th graders. We will do the same this year. Our team is in the SWCAC league and currently has 12 games. Practices would start the week of August 10th, with games starting the first week in September. This sport is offered to any GCCA student or a homeschool student who takes at least one academic class at the Academy.
GCCA partnered with the Grove City Athletics Club and offered Middle School and High School Co-Ed Cross Country last year, and we intend to do the same this year. This season will have between 4-6 Saturday Invitationals, with practices starting mid-August and the season-ending mid- October. This sport is offered to any GCCA student or homeschool student. Since it is not officially a GCCA sport, the homeschool students do not have to take an academic class. We are a Club Team.
I met with many GCCA families of female athletes and we discussed the possibility of having a Girls' Volleyball Team in the fall. This is still a possibility, but I want to make sure we have the number of girls needed to start a team before the school makes the commitment of both time and money to do so. This would be a team for 5-12th graders, we would play in the NYPENN league and have between 8-12 games. Practices would start in August, games would start in September on Tuesday and Fridays. This sport is offered to any GCCA student or homeschool student who takes at least one academic class at the Academy.
Archery is available for boys and girls in grades 3rd - 12th. This will start with Archery in PE Class in the fall, which everyone who wants to participate on the team must attend. Team practices start in December and last through the beginning of March and the State Tournament. This is opened to GCCA students and homeschool students, provided the homeschool students take the Archery PE Class.
Basketball would be in the winter season from November-February. We plan to have 2 different teams this year. Elementary basketball would be for girls and boys in 4-6th grade. They would play games on Saturdays starting in January, and hopefully some games after the Middle School Boys' team as well. We would like to expand that schedule to get around 10-12 games. The Middle School Boys' Team would be for 7-9th graders. We would be playing in the NYPENN league and have between 10-16 games. This is opened to GCCA students and homeschool students who take at least one academic class at the Academy.
Each sport requires different paperwork to be filled out. Physicals are required for each sport except Archery.
THESE MUST BE DATED AFTER 6/1/2020. Each sport has a different athletic fee associated with it.
For there to be athletics we need to have coaches, and this year we are in need of some new coaches. If you are interested in learning more about being a coach or know someone who would love to coach our athletes please email me. We will need a Head and Assistant Volleyball Coach, Assistant Soccer Coach, and an Elementary Basketball Coach.
DO TO DECISIONS THAT HAVE TO BE MADE GOING FORWARD, I NEED THIS SURVEY RETURNED BY JUNE 1st FOR FALL SPORTS. There will be another time to sign up for Winter Sports, but for SOCCER, VOLLEYBALL, and CROSS COUNTRY, I need to know. If you do not get this turned in you can still sign up for a Fall Sport, however if there isn't enough interest we might not be able to offer the sport in question.
