Electricity access remains a key issue for SADC member states.

About 52% of the population in the SADC region have no access to electricity, with an average of 68% living in rural areas. Despite the vast renewable energy resources of the SADC Member States, the renewable energy market remains largely underdeveloped.

The challenges encountered in efforts to extend the electricity grid, specifically to remote sparsely populated rural areas, have proven the cost-effectiveness of using distributed renewable energy for increasing energy access. Expanding access to modern, reliable, and affordable energy services have, therefore, become a key regional priority.
