Welcome to the registration site for the 2023 International Urban Wildlife Conference!
This conference will bring together urban planners, researchers, city and county staff, students, educators, biologists, and ecologists of all backgrounds to highlight research, case studies, policy initiatives, thought exercises, and discussions related to wildlife and natural resources in urban environments.

Our 2023 conference theme is: Tell your story: Communicating our science to the public, the media and policymakers while uplifting diverse voices.

Location: Our conference will be held in downtown Washington, D.C. within walking distance of the National Mall, Black Lives Matter Plaza, Capitol Hill, and many Smithsonian museums. You can find more information at our website about conference travel, and lodging.

Social: An Evening of Reconnecting Along the Anacostia River. Join us for an evening of food, drinks, and reconnecting along the Anacostia River. This year's welcome social will be a Solace Outpost, a D.C. brewery located on the Anacostia River and in the shadow of Nationals Park (Go Nats!). Reconnect with colleagues and take in views of Anacostia Park and the new Frederick Douglass Memorial Bridge while trying to spot bald eagles and ospreys along the river. Food will be provided.

Field Trips: We are offering seven field trips that feature local nature and culture in the D.C. area. These include osprey banding, boat tour of the Anacostia River, hike in Rock Creek Park, tour of the Civil War Defense, tour of Theodore Roosevelt Island, and tour of the Capitol.  Full descriptions can be found below.

Urban Wildlife Explorer Program: The Urban Wildlife Explorer program matches Explorers (students and early career professionals) with Guides (established professionals) for meetings about conference presentations, networking, and all things urban wildlife.

We know how overwhelming someone’s first or second conference can be, from meeting new people to networking and presentations. The Urban Wildlife Explorer Program is a Professional Development conference program. We also realize that our conference is often more than just a place to share research, but it is a chance to meet like-minded people and network with those in our field. Especially for students and early career professionals, we know how important it is to make those connections!

That is why we are offering the opportunity to embark on your professional Journey in the Urban Wildlife Explorer Program which will enhance the conference experience for Guides and Explorers alike. You can learn more at https://tinyurl.com/About-IUWC2023-ExplorerProgram

What is Urban Wildlife Explorer Program? The goal of this journey is to help students and early career professionals, (known as Explorers), form professional connections in our field of urban wildlife. On this professional development journey, Explorers are matched with a conference attendee who is established in their chosen field (known as Guides). Explorers and Guides meet in-person via their preferred scheduling methods and connect at least one time prior to the start of the conference (ie zoom). Explorers and Guides check-in with each other throughout the conference (and maybe even after!) following their provided journey itinerary. During the conference, an in-person mixer is also provided for all Explorers, Guides, and other conference attendees to meet and expand their networks!

Who are we looking for?

Urban Wildlife Explorers: We are looking for students and early career professionals attending the 2023 International Urban Wildlife Conference. We know how daunting conferences can be, and how difficult it can be to make connections especially now, as we are just beginning to return from the virtual and continued hybrid formats of conferences and events. The role of the Urban Wildlife Explorer is designed for students and early career professionals to get the most out of their conference experience. This journey offers you a chance to be uniquely matched with someone experienced in your field who will be your point of contact, provide the chance to network, ask questions, and forge lasting connections!

Urban Wildlife Guides: We are looking for experienced professionals to participate as Guides on the Urban Wildlife Journey. In this role, you will be a point of contact for explorer that you are uniquely matched with. Think back to the early days in your field. Surely you remember how nerve wracking it can be trying to network with someone who has your dream job or simply trying to figure out what the best questions are to ask. As a Guide in the Urban Wildlife Journey, you will be there (via itinerary) to answer questions, provide encouragement, or whatever else you think would help your matched Explorers. This role has no requirements and can be whatever you and your matched Explorers want it to be. It is also a great opportunity to meet the future pioneers of your field and possibly play a role in shaping someone’s future!
