Math Circle Volunteer Sign-Up (Fall 2021)
This is the official sign-up for volunteering for the TAMU Math Circle for the Fall 2021.

Your participation in the Math Circle is vital to our work and we thank you for your help!

This year we are introducing three distinct roles: Instructors, Facilitators, and Observers.  Instructors are responsible for creating a lesson plan for the meeting.  They will create, explain, and manage any activities that students will do.  Facilitators will help the Instructor carry out any activities by working in small breakout rooms with students and answering students' questions.  For this reason we expect that Facilitators have some background in mathematics, enough to address students' questions.  Note that at all times, the Instructor will be available to answer any questions from a Facilitator.  Observers will also be in breakout rooms to satisfy University requirements for adult supervision but are not required to answer questions about mathematics.

FACILITATORS: To be a Facilitator one should be comfortable with the mathematics in the instructor's activities, which will be provided in advance, and be able to respond to students' questions.  While we expect that primarily undergraduate math majors will fill this role, we welcome all others (including parents) to also work as Facilitators.  In general Facilitators will work just one session each Saturday (1.5 hours), but if you are interested in working more please indicate so below.  If there are any questions, please contact Joshua Goldstein at jgoldstein345@tamu.edu or Phil Yasskin at yasskin@tamu.edu.  Undergraduate facilitators will be paid $15 per session that they work (1.5 hours plus preparation). Graduate facilitators will receive $15 toward purchase of books or travel. Observers and Instructors and parent, faculty and high school student Facilitators are not paid.   If for any reason you do not need compensation, please write so at the end of this form.

OBSERVERS: Due to university regulations, each breakout room in Zoom must have at least two adults present at all times.  One of these adults will always be a facilitator, who are trained to work with the students and will be the "responsible person" in the room.  The other person will be an observer, who will have no duties other than to make sure everything is running smoothly in the breakout room.  If there is any problem, the observer can always contact the facilitator in the breakout room, or the meeting host.  For the Fall 2021 semester, we ask that you commit to observe for at least five (5) Saturdays (of course, you are welcome to observe for more than that!).  This will allow us to maintain a consistent schedule for the semester.  If you cannot observe for five (5) Saturdays but would still like to observe, we will do our best to accommodate you.

If you have a TAMU UIN, please enter it here for the purpose of doing the background check. Otherwise enter "None".
Type of Volunteer *
Please check all that you are interested in.  We generally expect undergraduate TAMU students to be facilitators, and in some cases instructors.  Parents are generally observers.  If you are a participant but would like to help out younger students (and you are under 18), please select Junior Facilitator.

Volunteer Background *
Required
If you selected faculty / grad student / undergrad / STEM Professional, which department / subject are you in?
Clear selection
Which school or company are you from?
What level(s) would you prefer to facilitate?
If you are observing, you do not need to complete this question.  Facilitating problem solving sessions will generally require a higher level of mathematical background.  We will do our best to accommodate any requests made here.  If you are not sure what to choose, please contact Joshua Goldstein at jgoldstein345@tamu.edu or Phil Yasskin at yasskin@tamu.edu.

Would you like to work more than one session on a Saturday? *
We will have three sessions each Saturday.  For example, would you be willing to work 12.00 - 1.30 and 1.45 - 3.15 on one Saturday?  This is not required.
How many times would you like to volunteer during the semester? *
E.g., if you enter '4' that means you would like to come on 4 different Saturdays.  We will have 11 meetings in the Spring.
Are you aware of the background check and Child Protection Training (CPT) requirements? *
Due to university regulations, all volunteers who attend the Math Circle on a regular basis must complete a background check and Child Protection Training.  This includes all facilitators and observers.  It is not possible to volunteer without fulfilling these requirements.  Once we have your registration we will follow up with more information on how to complete these requirements.
Comments
Please write any comments or concerns here.  If you are interested in being an instructor for a discovery learning activity, please indicate so here and provide a brief explanation of your mathematical background (if not graduate level or above).  If there are any questions, please email Joshua Goldstein at jgoldstein345@tamu.edu or Phil Yasskin at yasskin@tamu.edu.
