Schiller Institute Presents: Health + Climate Speaker Series
The Schiller Institute presents the Health + Climate Speaker Series. As recognized by the National Institute of Health’s Climate Change and Health Initiative, research at the intersection of health and climate change is crucial because climate drivers affect health outcomes through weather events such as droughts, wildfire, floods and extreme heat, and also through indirect exposure pathways such as environmental pollutants, food insecurity, and infectious diseases. Climate change elevates the risk of numerous threats to human health, with disproportionate impacts of illness and injury spread across a wide range of population groups and communities.

March 13th: Climate Change and Health: Lessons from “Big Microdata” *
Lecture by Brian Thiede (Penn State University, Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education)

This lecture describes recent and ongoing social science research examining the effects of climate change on human health globally. It highlights both the power and pitfalls of using “big microdata” for climate change and health research, and outlines new opportunities for innovation in this field.
March 19th: The Climate-Microbiome Initiative: Advancing science to fight climate-change effects on health via microbiome interventions *
Lecture by Vanni Bucci (UMass Chan Medical School)

Microbiomes drive the healthy functioning of environmental and human-associated ecosystems, playing a crucial role in maintaining their balance and resilience. This talk will present a new climate-microbiome initiative aimed at dampening the effects of climate change on human health through rational microbiome manipulation, employing a multidisciplinary team with expertise in infectious disease, bioengineering, computational modeling, and analytics.
