I am engaged in a Value Engineering exercise with my client to reduce overall project costs. We are considering several alternative roofing products for the flat roof – modified bituminous membrane, EPDM, TPO, and PVC.

The PVC membrane is the least expensive, but recent news of the chemical spill from the train derailment in East Palestine, Ohio has underscored the link between PVC manufacturing and cancer. Is this true? How do I know what information to trust? How do I balance environmental impact, cost, and material performance as I advise my client?

Which of the following ethical standards from the   AIA’s 2020 Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct must be considered before selecting the roofing material for this project?
