R&E Federations Strategic Planning
Research and Education (R&E) identity federations have been formed in countries and regions around the world to make access to collaborative tools and research materials easier with a single sign-on experience. This commonly takes the form of an academic institution enabling members' use of their campus credentials to login to online tools used by research and scholarly communities like portals and science gateways or to licensed resources such as on-line courses.

REFEDS, the international organisation representing R&E identity federations, is engaged in strategic research to anticipate how these digital infrastructure organizations should prioritise their efforts to be in a good position to meet the needs of online academic activities over the next 10-15 years. Your answers to these survey questions will be used to validate various future scenarios that will frame REFEDS' strategic planning; hence, your input is critical to the success of that research.

You are encourage to respond to these questions in whatever context you wish to - about the research, teaching, and learning activities with which you are engaged, or about the collaboration technology that enables those activities.

How long have you been involved professionally with research, scholarship, or education?
Clear selection
What is your current role?
If a representative someone from 10-15 years in the future could answer the questions you have today about how to best support collaboration among researchers, teachers, and learners, what three things would you most like to ask them?
What do you value about how research, education and scholarship are conducted?
What do you imagine as desirable settings for the conduct of research, education and scholarship? What parts of those experiences are most important to you?
What do you fear could threaten those desirable settings or your experience of them?
Thinking of the values and settings you've mentioned above, which practices, tools, organisations, or infrastructures that support achievement of them should be continued? Do you see those as being sustainable over the next 10-15 years? Are there other practices, tools, organisations, or infrastructures that should be created to support those values or settings?
What major professional decisions with long-term implications are you facing at the moment?
What major constraints do you experience in enabling collaboration among researchers, teachers, and learners?
If all constraints were removed, and you could direct what is done, what would you do?
If we'd like to follow up with you about your answers, would you be willing? If so, please supply an email address.
If you'd like to speak with us, please look at the REFEDS Federation 2.0 Working Group's wiki page below to see the schedule of "office hours" we are holding or to email us directly. A summary analysis of the answers to survey questions will be produced by the Working Group later this year.
