The "Best standardized practices for the agri-food sector" (BESPA-FOOD) project, funded by the European Union (EU), is a collaboration between UNIDO (lead agency) and the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), aimed at enhancing sustainable agriculture production in Sri Lanka's target value chains. The project will coordinate with the Pathfinder Foundation, an independent think-tank, to conduct the survey on how to facilitate and improve exports to India.
This survey seeks to gather information on the non-tariff barriers Sri Lankan companies face in exporting to the Indian market. These non-tariff barriers are broadly classified into Sanitary and phytosanitary measures (SPS) and technical barriers to trade (TBT), which
include a range of measures administrative, procedural and legal, and regulatory requirements.
Accordingly, the main purpose of this study is to assess specific problems in meeting product standards, regulations, and certification requirements that cause delays and
heavy costs in exporting to the Indian market. The findings of the study will
be used to identify areas of mutual concern and suggest effective solutions to
enhance bilateral trade between India and Sri Lanka.
