Back Safety
Workers should always employ proper lifting techniques when completing tasks:
-Rule of thumb- look up as you lift
-Face the load with feet shoulder width apart
-Ensure there is a firm grip on the load before lifting
-Lift with your legs not your back
-Lift smoothly without jerking
When moving the load:
-Avoid reaching out, handle heavy objects close to the body
-Avoid twisting the back or shoulders, turn the feet instead to avoid injury
- Avoid swinging a load up onto a shelf or platform, this is extremely damaging to bodily structures.
When lowering the load:
-Lower with the knees, not the back
-Avoid pinching fingers
-Avoid twisting the upper body
