COVID-19 Solidarity Gardens interest survey
Do you have a garden, want a garden or have skills or resources to donate to a community -wide garden effort?

The Solidarity Gardens project is a coalition of community stakeholders and volunteers who are organizing to improve food security and food self-sufficiency in Ithaca during the COVID-19 pandemic. We're part of a larger food security effort in and around Tompkins County: the piece of the solution we’re focused on is urban gardening. Growing food nourishes the spirit as well as the body, and we believe gardening is a crucial activity to foster in this time of physical isolation.

We are supporting our existing urban gardens, including the Ithaca Community Gardens, the Permaculture Park, the Esty Street Garden and the Floral Ave Garden, and increasing the capacity of those gardens to safely provide both food for donations and access to growing space. We are also creating new urban gardens wherever we can, in yards and tree lawns, and empowering volunteers to learn about urban gardening and pandemic safety and to get involved and make a difference in our community. We're building on existing relationships between our urban gardens and organizations such as CCE, Greenstar Community Projects, Loaves and Fishes and FDN’s Neighborhood Food Hubs, and helping to forge connections between urban gardeners and this year's expanded food distribution networks.

As part of this, we're looking for experienced gardener-volunteers to start gardening in food gardens around Ithaca. If interested, please add your name to this volunteer spreadsheet: http://tiny.cc/gfognz

In urban areas, gardening in raised beds are the best way to mitigate soil contamination and produce the highest yield. an 8'x4'x16" raised bed costs $150 to build and fill with high quality soil. You can donate any amount to support this effort through The Seed Money for the Future fund here:

We invite the Tompkins County community to join us as we believe a coordinated community-wide, community lead approach is the best way forward to meet this challenge. Please contact Josh Dolan for more information at sapsquatch7@gmail.com
