Tell City Council that parking in bike lanes, sidewalks, and streetcar tracks is not acceptable!

On November 13, 2023, Charlotte City Council is expected to vote on revisions to Chapter 14 of the City Code. These revisions would increase the fines for cars that park on sidewalks, bicycle paths, streetcar right-of-ways, electric vehicle spaces, and loading zones.

Currently, the fine for parking in these areas is only $25. The proposed amendments would raise the fines to $100.

People who walk and bike in Charlotte are involved in only 3% of all crashes, yet they account for approximately 33% of all traffic fatalities. They are the most vulnerable users of our streets and, therefore, need safe conditions at all times. Creating safe corridors for people of all ages, abilities, and transportation choices will help our neighbors feel comfortable on our streets and more likely to use the infrastructure intended for non-car transportation.

Yet because the current fines are so low, there is little disincentive for drivers to avoid parking in these areas. We also need the City to enforce these fines in order to truly discourage drivers from parking illegally.

Sustain Charlotte sent this letter to city council members ahead of the public comment to show our support for these revisions.

Now it’s your turn! Sign this petition below and let City Council know that you want safe, unobstructed bike lanes, sidewalks, and streetcar right-of-ways. We will deliver the signatures, comments, and photos to City Council prior to the vote!
