Theme of our walk ~ "Protect your highlights"
That's a technical mantra in cinematography that also holds value in life. Let the shadows fall where they may and use them as beautiful compositional elements, but keep the detail in all your highlights! It's so easy to lose them, and brightness just becomes pure white. This is why the dynamic range in our cameras is so important. In life, neuroscientists tell us that we have a negative bias. We have evolved to identify the dangers, pay close attention to them, and worry about them, but we tend to gloss over the good things that happen. It's a deeply entrenched cognitive bias, but we can find ways to counter it. Holding our cameras, we are drawn to brightness instinctively, and with practice can learn to notice it with more nuance. Similarly, in everyday life, we can build our capacity to notice the smallest glimmers, whether it's a multi-coloured autumnal leaf or the friendly smile of a stranger. In this mindful walk, we will slow down and get curious through a collective thought experiment. What happens if we really buy into this principle that highlights need our active protection? In what ways might the world look different? What might you notice that you would normally have walked straight past? - Menka Sanghvi
