  • Workshop sessions will take place on Wednesday, October 4, Saturday October 28, and Saturday November 18, at the Liberal Arts Engagement Hub (room 120, Pillsbury Hall, University of Minnesota Twin Cities).
(Update: Wednesday, Oct 4, is now completely booked! Please choose from the remaining options.)
  • Our team will lead an inter-generational community of participants from diverse occupational, disciplinary, immigrant (settler ancestry is welcome) and artistic backgrounds to play with home-made sound visualizers. Together, we will explore the multiple ways in which our bodies can produce and visibilize sound frequencies, despite external efforts to silence. Sessions will be facilitated by composer-anthropologist-voice coach Ritika Ganguly and curator-interdisciplinary artist Zoe Cinel, with Department of Asian and Middle Eastern Studies, U of M Faculty Nida Sajid.
  • Each session will be 2 hours in length.
  • Chai, water, snacks, and sound visualizer building materials will be provided.

    Sound Stories
    is
a year-long public composition experiment at the University of Minnesota to explore individual and communal resonance and resistance through sound. We will start with a basic experimental environment constructed in the physical space of The Hub - a Cymatic or sound visualization room - and learn how community members resonate, envision, and adapt to their environment and to each other in the face of acts of silencing. This multi-sensorial performance environment will use the emerging science and art form of Cymatics - the study of the visible effects of sound and resonance - in order to explore our everyday experiences with sounds and their invisibilising by authoritarian regimes.

    Funders:
This project is made possible by the Liberal Arts Engagement Hub, University of Minnesota, Twin Cities.
