THE TOWN OF NEWINGTON, NEW HAMPSHIRE
The Old Stone School (1921) is a contributing resource to the Newington Center National Register Historic District, and part of the Old Town Center historic district. Vacant since 2003, and in fair condition, a grant from the New Hampshire Preservation Alliance supported a Historic Building Condition Assessment report, conducted by a preservation consultant and architect in late 2022. The Assessment report provides a history of the school, outlines certain requirements in the Quitclaim Deed, describes existing conditions and establishes recommendations for a prioritized, phased preservation-based approach based on the immediacy of the condition(s) issues. Historic Building Assessment for the Old Stone School (link)
The New Hampshire Division of Historical Resources holds a Preservation Covenant which requires certain rehabilitation standards be applied to both maintenance and long-term renovation approaches.
Currently, the HDC and the Board of Selectman are seeking input from residents regarding potential re-use alternatives to help the newly formed Old Stone School Committee to develop recommendations for addressing the vacant and deteriorating building.
This survey is being to sent to every Newington household by US Mail – every voting age resident of Newington is encouraged to complete the survey, which must be submitted to the Town (at drop boxes located in the Town Hall and the Library) by 4:00 PM on Friday, June 30th. You may make copies of the survey for additional recipients or pick up additional copies at the Town Hall or Library during normal business hours.
If you would like to learn more about the Old Stone School, the Old Stone School Committee will be holding an informational meetings and exterior site walk of the property on Thursday, June 22 starting at 6:00 pm. The Committee will move across the street to the Old Town Hall second floor meeting room at +-7:30 PM to discuss the building and answer additional questions that you may have about the building PLEASE FEEL free to complete the survey after the meeting if you feel that additional information will be helpful.
