INTRODUCTION: In order to properly celebrate Jesus’ Resurrection, the central feast of Christianity, the Church sets aside 50 days of joyful celebration. These 50 days from Easter to Pentecost are celebrated as one feast day, sometimes called “the great Sunday.” So Easter does not end on Easter Sunday! During this joyous 50 day season, we celebrate the Feast of the Ascension, when Jesus returned to his Father in Heaven, and Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit came to be with the Apostles. The Holy Spirit came like tongues of fire and a mighty rushing wind to fire up the Apostles and push them out to share the Good News. Pentecost is sometimes called the birthday of the Church.
JESUS BRINGS PEACE: Welcome to the Second Sunday of Easter, also known as the Sunday of Divine Mercy. In today’s Gospel, Jesus greets his disciples with the gift of peace. Jesus then tells his disciples to continue the work that he has begun; as Jesus was sent by God, so Jesus sends his disciples. He gives his disciples the gift of the Holy Spirit so that they will be able to accomplish this task. Today's Gospel combines two scenes: Jesus’ appearance to his disciples after his Resurrection and Jesus’ dialogue with Thomas, the disciple who doubted. Turn to page 3 in your Good News Weekly and read "Jesus Brings Peace." Then answers the questions below.

SUMMARY: Fantastic! Jesus greeted his scared disciples by saying "Peace be with you." Jesus wanted them to know that they could trust in God. Peace comes from believing that even though hard things happen, God will be with us and help us through them. Jesus also shows us, in this Gospel, the connection between the forgiveness of sins and the gift of the Holy Spirit. With the grace of the Holy Spirit, we can share forgiveness and reconciliation with others. We also see Thomas give witness to us that the Jesus who was raised is the same Jesus who died. Through the gift of the Holy Spirit, we are among those who are blessed, for we have not seen and yet we believe in the Resurrection of our Lord. We proclaim this belief every time we pray the Apostles' Creed and say "... and on the third day he rose again from the dead..."
