Berlin Incubator for Media in Exile (BIMEX) is a program for independent media from Belarus and Russia in exile. The program's first phase will take place in Berlin from October to mid-December 2022. During the second phase (2023), the media will test new products, develop organisations and will have an opportunity to implement joint projects with German partners.

To participate in the program, please fill out this online application form in English by 6 October - extended until 10 October 2022. After the selection period, qualified applicants will be invited for online interviews (October 4-12). You will be informed by email (make sure to check your spam folder) about the selection process results.

About BIMEX?

BIMEX will assist in analysing primary needs and strategic planning, establishing a new legal entity or remote editorial office, launching a new project with a German partner, raising funds, and registering as a media outlet in Germany. The modules include training and individual consultations on analysing and developing a financial media model, workshops on German legislation, taxes, human resources, traditional fundraising and grant opportunities, and consulting and mentorship support in registering, launching and managing a project.

Who is eligible to participate?

1. The program is open to teams of journalists and media organisations from Belarus and Russia with a strong commitment to editorial independence and high standards of journalistic ethics;

2. Application can be submitted by media teams that have relocated to Germany or can travel to Berlin to participate in training workshops;

3. Applicants must not be connected to a political party, political institution, or sanctioned businesses and individuals;

4. Applicants must have published stories on Belarus or Russia in the past 6 months in the country or from exile;

5. Applicants must have a clear concept for their media, a 12 month plan, and a budget for their media project;

6. Applicants may be subject to due diligence, as part of the selection process.
 
The decisions will be made by an expert panel comprising independent journalists and media experts, as well as jinn, JX Fund and Thompson Reuters Foundation representatives, based on the strength of the concept, plan and budget.

Is there any country limit for the applications?

BIMEX invites independent media only from Belarus and Russia.

What are the language requirements?

Languages of instruction are English and Russian. Good English command is necessary to participate in meetings, pitches and study visits in Germany and the EU.

What does it cost to participate? 

Participation is free of charge. The Federal Government of Germany financially supports the program.
