Race Rules

The Flag City Backyard Ultra is a last man standing event. Runners will complete a 4.3 mile loop around the perimeter of the reservoir starting at the top of each hour. A whistle will be used as a warning three minutes, two minutes and one minute before the start. At the top of the hour, one long whistle will signal the start of the next lap.

If a runner is not in the starting corral at the sound of the long whistle, that runner is marked as DNF. There is no finish line. The race is only over when one person completes a loop. There are no ties. If no individual completes the last loop, there is no winner.

  1. This event is all about having fun, socializing, and testing our endurance.

  2. Before a runner may participate, they must sign the waiver.

  3. Runners should be in the starting area at 7:30 AM for the rules briefing.

  4. Runners must be in the starting corral at 8:00 AM or they will be considered 'Did Not Start' (DNS). No exceptions.

  5. If a runner is not in the starting corral at the top of each hour, they are considered 'Did Not Finish' (DNF). No exceptions.

  6. Upon finishing a loop, it is the responsibility of the runner to make sure the loop was recorded.

  7. If you do not finish the loop within the hour or you decide not to start the next loop you will be designated as DNF and be asked to ring the cowbell in disgrace. The runner is responsible to make sure the DNF is recorded.

  8. Runners may not receive any personal support once they enter the corral until they have finished the loop. This includes receiving water, food, or support from others.

  9. No artificial aids (including trekking poles).

  10. A headlamp or other lighting source will be required after dark. There is very little light around the reservoir. This is also a safety issue to identify where people are.

  11. All garbage must be deposited in event garbage cans and not the reservoir garbage cans.

  12. Please limit all biological functions to the race designated port-a-john on top of the reservoir.

  13. Runners, spectators, and volunteers are required to stay away from vehicles and boat traffic.

  14. Runners may use chairs and blankets on the grass at the top of the reservoir but tents can only be pitched at the base of the reservoir.

  15. In the case of an emergency call 911. There are color coded garbage barrels placed around the perimeter of the reservoir. Please refer to the color of the garbage barrel closest to you when calling 911. There will be no medical staff or medical supplies available for runners. This is a self supported event.

  16. Runners are responsible for their own nourishment and fluids.

  17. Runners must be 18 years old or order on race day.

  18. Runners may not participate if they have tested positive or experienced symptoms of Covid 19 in the last 10 days.
