“Charting English Language Development: Tools for Understanding and Assessing the ELD Standards” provides resources to deconstruct each English Language Development (ELD) standard across the grade spans (K-1, 2, 3-5, 6-8, and 9-12) into understandable, teachable language targets and to assess each ELD standard in order to inform instruction and track student progress in English language development.

The tools can be used for professional learning, planning, and assessment of integrated and designated ELD instruction. Charting English Language Development is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all language skills. In addition to an introductory guide to using the tools and a glossary of ELD terms, this product consists of two main tools:

Deconstructing the ELD Standards
  • This tool deconstructs each ELD standard into the instructional context where it applies, the language skills that would be taught and assessed, and the meaningful purpose for learning the language skills. Each standard has sample language targets for guiding instruction.
ELD Standards Assessment Charts
  • This tool outlines the range of language skills to be assessed for each ELD standard across proficiency levels (from Emerging to Expanding to Bridging) that can be used to track student progress in ELD. The tool comes in the form of a customizable spreadsheet that can be adjusted to accommodate any number of students, detailed assessment notes, and additional language skills.
Purpose
  • Understand each ELD standard
  • Plan integrated and designated ELD lessons
  • Assess ELD standards and track progress over time
