While we at B More Global firmly believe that travel abroad can be a life-changing experience for young people, there are lots of reasons why overseas travel might not be appropriate for your next trip. The great news is, it’s easy to incorporate local travel into your everyday life so you can be an explorer all year round.

The Underground Railroad Experience Trail allows you to explore within your own community, while getting to experience the beauty behind its history. During your visit to the park you will be walking the trail of the enslaved who were once seeking freedom. As you go along your journey, consider how escaping slaves may have used bramble patches, hollow trees, and other natural features to guide them, as "slave catchers" patrolled the fields and woods, and be sure to take in all aspects of the experiences left behind by brave souls of the past.

Woodlawn Manor & Barn -- Fun Fact! The manor and barn were built by prominent Quakers of the area, and Quakers were firmly anti-slavery. From 1822-1919 it was owned by Dr. William P. Palmer, a successful Quaker physician and farmer who lived there with his family, but Palmer went against the group’s teaching and kept 13 slaves at Woodlawn. As a result, his Quaker membership was later revoked due to his family utilizing slave labor at Woodlawn.

A stream crossing -- Fun Fact! The stream crossing was one of the many obstacles the enslaved faced in their journey to freedom due to them lacking swimming skills. However, there were such things as hidden boats or a kind ferryman to provide a way across.

A large hollow tree -- Fun Fact! Large hollow trees were often used by fugitives as hiding places. They were also sometimes used as secret storage places for food and water provided by friends to help fugitives on their path.

The White Ash Tree -- Fun fact! This tree is 300 years old, meaning it has witnessed the founding of this village in the 1700s, the clearing of the forest for farming, and the journey of so many brave fugitives seeking freedom from enslavement.
