RFI: A Unified Data Framework for DOE Biological and Environmental Research

Formal Announcement: https://www.govinfo.gov/content/pkg/FR-2023-04-17/pdf/2023-08029.pdf

The US Department of Energy's Biological and Environmental Research (BER) Program is seeking input on the need and the structure of a unified data framework that links or integrates existing data activities.

The aim is to gather current and future science questions that require a more integrated data infrastructure for data access and processing, especially those that span more than one research area. As well as community input regarding what components or technologies are needed to develop a more unified data infrastructure, and what would improve accessibility to these resources for a broad range of communities, perspectives, and research domains.

Information may be used by the BER Advisory Committee (BERAC) to help inform and recommend a strategy for a unified BER data management and analysis framework.

Dates: Comments prior to July 1, 2023, will be discussed during BERAC summer sessions. All comments are requested on or before October 31, 2023.

Feedback options: Interested persons may submit written comments via this form or direct email. Emailed comments must be sent to BERACRFI@science.doe.gov with the subject line ‘‘BER unified data’’.

Verbal comments may be shared during an open Zoom "listening session", which will be recorded. The recording and transcript will be provided to BER, alongside a summary of points to each prompt.

Do you conduct research in one of the BER research areas (i.e., Atmospheric Science; Earth and Environmental System Modeling; Environmental Science; Bioenergy and Bioproducts; or Plant and Microbial Genomics).

If so, which area(s)? Please limit additional detail on your area(s) of research interest to a brief paragraph.

What new or existing research areas might benefit from improvements in data availability or access across research areas, potentially enabling scientific breakthroughs — and why?
