In the last four years, Peru has had four presidents during one of the most unstable periods in the country’s history. On June 6th, 2021, leftist Perú Libre candidate Pedro Castillo defeated the far-right Keiko Fujimori (daughter of Alberto Fujimori) by a razor-thin margin. Fujimori refused to concede, alleging that the results were fraudulent. Nonetheless, Castillo assumed the presidency on July 28th. On August 27th, Peru’s highly fragmented Congress confirmed President Pedro Castillo’s cabinet in a 73-50 vote.

Peru seems to be between a rock and hard place. What are the prospects for the future?
