Submit a Public Comment to urge the Federal Government to enact federal RENTER PROTECTIONS! Comments due by July 31.
The government is deciding whether to condition $150 billion of landlord loans on a set of renter protections. They have asked for public input on protections needed to address the power imbalance between renters and their landlords. Renter protections could benefit over 12.4 million rental homes across the country. Landlords and business interests will come out in full force to try to stop the government from protecting renters, so it is critical that we make our voices heard!

The Greater Memphis Housing Justice Project (GMHJP) and supporting organizations want your comments and ideas for our letter in support of tenant protections. You can also comment directly to the FHFA (the federal government agency that is oversees these loans and this public comment process), by clicking here

You can submit the same stories, comments, and/or solutions that you provide on this comment form to the FHFA comment form. Information submitted directly to the FHFA will be publicly available and searchable. Information you provide through this form will be anonymized in our letter. Your Comment  *
If you are a tenant, your comment can include problems you've experienced and solutions that you envision. Here are a few examples of the types of information that would be helpful to share. You do not need to answer all of these questions: Has your rent been raised beyond what you can afford? What are the conditions of your housing? Are things repaired in a timely manner? Have you been unlawfully evicted? When you have a disagreement with your landlord, do you feel like you are treated fairly? How do challenges with your housing impact you and your family? Some solutions you can suggest are rent regulations to prevent egregious and frequent rent hikes, banning evictions without just cause, reasonable limits on the amount of monthly income required to rent a property, a landlord registry, and enforcement of tenant protections.
