Band/Art Selection for grade 7/8 (for current grade 6 students)
April 19, 2024

Dear Parent/Guardian of grade 6 students:

We place students in classrooms according to their Band or Art course.   Please fill out the document below stating which option your child prefers. Please make an informed decision as students will not be allowed to switch their option choice.  THIS IS A TWO YEAR COMMITMENT.

Below is a description of each of the options to help you with your decision.

ART – The art program at NMS is intended to give students the specialized skill set, and background theory they need to be competitive in the arts not only throughout their school years but in their future careers as well. This program gives students a variety of art experiences including drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture, and found object art. The skills they learn in art class can assist them in not only making visually appealing and interesting projects across subject areas, but will also give them the confidence to think out-side-the-box and further develop their ability to think creatively. Students will continue to take art in grade 8, and can also take art as an option as many as four times in grades nine through twelve.  THERE IS NO FEE FOR ART. Mr. Richard Smith will be teaching Art next year.

BAND –The band program at NMS is intended for students to value musical experiences. Students will develop an understanding of the elements, concepts, and techniques for making music. Students will have the opportunity for creative expression, creating original and interpretive music. Students will learn to connect music to contexts of time, place, and community, and develop understanding of how music reflects and influences culture and identity.  Students who choose band at NMS will have the opportunity to play a variety of wind or percussion instruments. In the past, grade seven band students traveled to the Level One Band Festival in Brandon for a day that included a performance, clinic, and entertainment. Historically, students perform a band concert in January and in the spring. THERE IS AN $80 BAND FEE FOR EACH YEAR (payable in September). Ms. Kaylynne MacDiarmid will be teaching Band next year.
