First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh 8th Principle Survey
The Racial Justice Task Force is in the process of assessing the thoughts and feelings of First Church members about the appropriateness of voting sometime in the fall to add the "8th Principle" to the 7 Principles that we hold so closely to our hearts.

Here is the wording of the 8th Principle as being presented at this time (it is anticipated that this wording will change slightly):

“We, the member congregations of the Unitarian Universalist Association, covenant to affirm and promote: journeying toward spiritual wholeness by working to build a diverse multicultural Beloved Community by our actions that accountably dismantle racism and other oppressions in ourselves and our institutions.”

Could you please answer the following questions to express your honest thoughts about this initiative for First Unitarian Church of Pittsburgh?
The 8th Principle came from a feeling that Unitarian Universalists need something to renew our commitment to Racial Justice, to hold ourselves accountable, and to fulfill the potential of our existing principles.  Do you think this is important work that First Unitarian needs to address?

A person can believe they are being a “good UU” and following the 7 Principles without thinking about or dealing with racism and other oppressions at the systemic level.  Is this something that we need to think about and address as a congregation?
