About the Workshop

Join our vibrant community gathering to kindle the spirit of togetherness and warmth as we transition into the colder months, exploring the rich tapestry of the ancient Persian celebration, Yalda. Under the guidance of Monelli Rahmatian, immerse yourself in a captivating dance journey that unveils the ceremonial traditions of Shabe-Yalda, the Persian Winter Solstice celebration.

This one-hour workshop is a unique opportunity to delve into the enchanting realm of Iranian dance, music, and culture. Discover the essence of Shabe-Yalda through graceful movements and rhythms as we share insights into the significance of this celebration.

Whether you're a seasoned dancer or simply curious to learn, join us in unravelling the steps to a well-known Yalda song traditionally performed during celebrations. The dance is accessible, enjoyable, and tailored for all levels. However, if you prefer to soak in the cultural experience without dancing, you're more than welcome to join us for an informative and engaging session.

Why celebrate Shabe-Yalda, the Winter Solstice? It's a cherished occasion to honour the longest night of the year, surrounded by loved ones, indulging in nourishing food, and sharing uplifting poems that symbolize hope for the imminent arrival of spring. The communal energy generated during these gatherings becomes a source of warmth that guides us through the colder months, reassuring us that the promise of warmer days is just around the corner. Come, be a part of this cultural celebration, and let the spirit of Yalda illuminate our shared journey through the winter season.

About the Instructor

Monelli, an Iranian-born artist, delicately weaves the vibrant tapestry of her cultural roots into the Canadian mosaic. Arriving in Canada at the age of 7, she integrates her deep connection with Iranian traditions into the fabric of her Western upbringing. Passionate about Persian music, dance, and culture, Monelli has become a beacon for cultural exchange on the Island, gracing stages at events such as DiverseCity Multicultural Festivals, River Clyde Pageant, the recent 2023 Canada Games Illumination Festival, and more. Music teacher and ArtsSmarts Project coordinator, Karri Shea, reflects on Monelli's impact, stating, 'Monelli's excitement for dancing is contagious and brings joy to all that see her perform.'

Outside the realm of dance, Monelli finds solace in spending time with her two children, cooking nourishing meals, indulging in ocean dips (even in the colder months!), gardening, and embracing the tranquility of the woods. Her holistic lifestyle, deeply rooted in traditional healing and wellness modalities, involves Kundalini Yoga and martial arts.

Don't hesitate to say Salām (the Persian greeting) if you spot Monelli around!
