GROOVING TOWARD EMPATHY: JAZZ DANCE FOR EMPATHY BUILDING with Erinn Liebhard

This movement session introduces an approach to teaching jazz dance that prioritizes groove, interaction and improvisation, addressing these themes in the contexts of the African diasporic roots of the form and how they encourage the development of embodied empathy. Interacting with one another through embodied groove creates danced empathy because rhythm is at our shared human core. Providing people ways to simultaneously express themselves both as individuals and members of a group creates opportunities for them to experience their own backgrounds, cultures and interests next to those of others, appreciating all shared ideas and honoring how they intersect. Session participants will be led through a series of tools for and discussion on embodying groove and improvising with it individually, in partners and in groups to encourage the development of embodied empathy within their own communities.

This workshop is open to all dance and theater educators as well as other arts teachers.
