A Fellowship for Equity, Empowerment and Storytelling

This mini-fellowship for Grantmakers for Education members aims to harness the power of storytelling to learn about, reflect back, and imagine what philanthropy would look like if funders of color could bring their whole selves to their work.

A cohort of 10-20 fellows will participate in short group activities via Zoom once a week during the four weeks leading up to the EdFunders annual conference (between September 19 - October 16). They will gather in person from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm in Austin, Texas for a preconference slot on Monday, October 18, and will be invited to perform their pieces during a conference session on Tuesday, October 19.

Fellows will develop community and receive hands-on training and an opportunity to practice storytelling and sharing their own stories. They will be invited to consider one small step they can take to bring their ideas forward in their organizations or within the EdFunders network, as a way to enact a new vision of philanthropy.

Benefits:

Stories enable us to hold up a mirror to ourselves, and to share our vision for the future. Stories can help inspire others, and can galvanize communities to work together to make change. Becoming an EdFunders Equity Storytelling Fellow will give you a chance to learn and practice these skills, and to be a part of an engaged network of funders who together want to help shape the future of philanthropy.

Eligible applicants, consider joining if you:

  • Are interested in issues related to funders of color.
  • Want to interact with other funders of color in a safe and creative space.
  • Want to learn how to create, share and learn from other storytellers.
  • Are planning to attend the Grantmakers for Education annual conference.
  • Can commit at least one hour per week during the four weeks leading up to the EdFunders conference (between September 19 and October 16); participate from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm on Monday October 17 for the preconference workshop; and participate from 11:00 am - 12:15 pm on Tuesday, October 18 for the live performance during the conference.

Please note that the workshop and performance may be video-recorded and shared. The live performance on Tuesday, October 18 will be open to other conference attendees to watch Fellows share their work and participate in a Q&A with performers about the experience.

Cost:
While there is no cost to participate in the fellowship directly, participants will be expect to pay for their conference registration.
