Open your Midterm exam and check your translations. You can use published translations and commentaries and/or work with peers. You may print your exam and hand-write corrections, or use track changes. I don't need to see the corrections--I trust that you will do them.
Any lingering translation questions you want cleared up?
Now comment holistically on how you did: (1) What went well? *
(2) What did you miss? Look for patterns but also call out specific morphology, syntax, and vocab. (Transliterations are fine here.) *
(3) Comment on your sight skills and retention of seen material. How much of the first two passages did you retain (provided you had translated them for HW or in class)? How did the sight passage(s) go? Had you read any of the three exam passages in English before? If so, did that help? *
Now look at your quizzes, including the Thucydides quiz, and your starting goals. Taking into account these materials, your qualifying exam (if you took one this semester and want to discuss it), and the Midterm, comment on your current Greek skills and what improvement you have seen: What structures do you now recognize? What sorts of vocab have you now internalized? What types of Greek (eg Homeric, lyric) or particular authors are you better at translating? Sing your own praises! *
Now reflect on your process. When do you prepare Greek for this class, where, and with whom? Do you make ancillary materials like vocab lists or flashcards? *
How much of the Greek are you getting through, on average? *
What are your Greek-reading goals for the remainder of the semester? Is there anything in your process you want to change? *
Think about how well you are understanding and enjoying the assigned scholarship. What do you find challenging when you read strategically vs. immersively? What has helped you to generate comments and questions in class? If you aren't speaking much on Fridays, what would make it possible to participate? *
Anything else you want to add about your experience of or performance in the first half of the semester?
A copy of your responses will be emailed to the address you provided.
