WORKSHOP: NATURE DOCUMENTARY HACKING
WED  09.10  //  HEVRE  // 14:00 - 16:00

Can we create new collective stories within the nature documentary’s cultural hegemonies and “greenwashed” politics?

This experimental workshop by live cinema artist Dr. AMY CUTLER re-sites the “nature documentary” not as a passively consumed televisual fable, but as a shared, collaborative, and even interventionist practice. Using smartphones, we will come together as a unit to live hack and collaboratively re-write the “tyranny of formula” of the nature documentary and its narrative voice-over, finding new routes to survival and solidarity within it.

As a genre, nature documentary seems to belong to everybody and nobody, powerfully performing the larger structures of society and its mediation of possible futures. How are these stories failing us – and nature? In our live hacking we will open the social and ecological possibilities in thinking of “nature documentary” not as a global, passively consumed TV spectacle but as a shared collaborative practice – stitching together diverse producers and materials. How can this be used as an ultra-adaptable form for new artistic and interspecies collectives and their political imaginings? How can we rewrite or remix these scripts, and why might we want to? Can we, after Negarestani, find ways of becoming-vermin in these nature documentary pedagogies - opening up new plot-holes, rather than the "wholesome plots" which cover them up?

This workshop is free to attend, but capacity is limited. Please fill out the form below if you'd like to attend and we'll confirm with you after the deadline.
