Summer Lab Check-in_Template
This survey is designed to assess your career progression and development in the lab.
Prior to this survey you should have completed the MyIDP assessment (
http://myidp.sciencecareers.org/
) and review and complete relevant activities in the resources developed in the Avasthi Lab (
http://www.avasthilab.org/wp-content/uploads/2018/11/AvasthiLab_CDW2018.pdf
).
After this survey you will have a 1:1 with Jaime to discuss results and any other concerns you may have. The results of this survey are private (only Jaime will see) but not anonymous.
This survey is based in part on:

.
Note - everyone touches NIH funding and the myIDP tool is obligatory. It ensures we are all in compliance.

My work output can be described as
A sprint. I work furiously for a stretch and then need a rest to recuperate. If I don't rest I start to operate suboptimally.
A marathon. Slow and steady wins the race and its also how I work. I make slow, steady, consistent progress. I get enough recoup time through my nights, weekends, and time off.
A triathon - really a mix and dictated by the environment. I can have periods of high stress productivity and go back to slow steady progress. I am able to regulate enough that I don't seem to lose too much productivity with changes to demands and environment.

Regarding pressure and motivation
I need gentle nudges in the right direction. I can get complacent and appreciate a prod, even if times I don't seem like I need it.
I put so much pressure on myself I need to be told I'm doing a good job and when I should take a breath. I don't often give myself enough breaks and this can hurt my productivity. Pushing harder may not be the best strategy with me.
I feel pretty balanced as far as pressure goes. If I need a prod, I welcome it, but definitely also feel very self-motivated. If I'm producing work as desired I probably don't need much on this front.
Pressure is a double-edged sword. No pressure and I become demotivated. Too much pressure and I become demotivated. I'll admit motivating me is a tough balance.

How are you feeling about the pace of your progression?
Too slow - I'm stuck all the time.
A pace inline with my goals.
Too fast. While I'm making good progress, I am constantly tired and burnt out.
Too fast and too slow. I'm constantly tired and burnt out but don't feel like I'm progressing.
