The Skill of Confidence
What are college coaches really looking for when they recruit athletes?
Why does he call confidence a skill and not a feeling?
What's his definition of self-confidence and why does he think that comes before all other skills?
What's the easiest way to build self-confidence?
The skill we're performing can't be new, it has to be something we're so used to doing that it just is what we do.  We don't want to try to create something new on race day, we want to roll out what we've already developed.  How does practice affect "nervousness"?
Remember how we talk about the stories we tell?  What does self-talk have to do with confidence?
Thoughts influence actions.  Why would we want to give ourselves MORE negative self-talk.  You can give yourself positive "self affirmations" to set the foundation for positive self talk.  What might be some self affirmations that might feel good to you?
Just like visualization, it's the emotion that the words trigger that's the most important.  What do FEEL when you say your affirmation to yourself?  (If you don't feel anything, that's not your affirmation, find something that inspires you, that moves you.)
Tell me 10 things that make you who you are that you're proud of:
Write a short self confidence letter to yourself about the things you've done that you're proud of:
The worst thing we can do is tear each other down on the same team, we need to get away from people that tear us down and get closer to people who build us up.  How can you build up your teammates in the area of confidence?
How would you like to be corrected and taught? What would help you learn the skills more quickly and effectively?
How can you re-frame feedback or "failures" in way that would maintain or build your confidence?
Here's that video he was referring to, "Here's To the Crazy Ones."
Meet Ryan Held
Ryan is a waterbender, he feels the water, he finds water at his catch, he slides powerfully through his breakouts.  What was Ryan's personality as a little kid?
When Ryan started swimming his mom had to buy him participation ribbons because he was so far down in the placings.  But he loved it regardless.  How does his coach describe Ryan's sense of humility?
What did his coach try to instill in him as an athlete?
How did Ryan's Sophomore year State meet go?
How did Ryan respond to that disappointment?
All the swimmers going to Olympic Trials are in shape, strong, and very, very good swimmers.  What makes those in the final heat or on the podium different than the rest of the elite athletes in the event?
How do Ryan's parents talk about Ryan and his swimming?
Ryan was 9 year old when he saw Michael Phelps swim in Athens, he was 13 in 2008 when Phelps won 8 golds and Nathan Adrian was at his first Olympics.  Caeleb Dressel is a swimming Icon.  Ryan got to hear the anthem on the podium with two of his heroes and perhaps the fastest sprinter in history.
Just a Kid From Somewhere
Ryan says the night before his relay his mind was flooded with thoughts, "what ifs."  What is his strategy to handle these racing thoughts?
What does Ryan say to his parents and friends at the end of the video?  What would you like to say to your parents and friends?
