Our 2023-24 Flight Experience is a chance for students to practice math, physics, and geography skills using a flight simulator. Under the guidance of Mr. Dawson and guest pilots, students will be taken through procedures for taxing, take off, landing, and navigating using small planes, jets, and commercial aircraft as they advance through courses.
Flight club students will learn to navigate using their instruments and air traffic control. The simulator is based on X-plane software and uses technology such as tablets, simulator yokes and pedals for realistic flight and navigation with more than 20,000 airports in a database.
Students will learn various skills including:
Basic math and computation
The basic forces at work on their aircraft, particularly lift, weight, thrust, and drag.
Logic and perception
Note taking skills
Collaborative communication
Measurement, time, distance, & speed
Reading and interpreting maps and understanding coordinates
Completing pre-flight, taking off, flying, and landing checklists
