Register by June 23

There is so much culture and history to explore right in our own backyards! Join us for a journey of exploring some of our local culture and history in the greater Dayton area. We’ll explore each site together; some sites may have a guide for us, others will be self-guided. After each site visit, you’ll have the option to continue the conversation while enjoying lunch at a local establishment (lunch will be at your own expense).

Saturday, June 29 @ 9am - National Afro-American Museum & Cultural Center (1350 Brush Row Road, Wilberforce, OH, USA), meet in the parking lot

-We’ll explore African American historical figures and events through the ever-changing exhibits at the museum. A few of the current exhibits include: “African Art: Form, Function, and Fraught Histories” which highlights the enormous impact of African Art on the world, “African Americans Fighting for a Double Victory” which explores the many ways African Americans served our country during World War II, “Queens of the Heartland” which features the stories of 30 Ohio African American women who were a significant influence in the Suffrage and Civil Rights Movements, and “Rhythm of the Revolution - The Transformative Power of Black Art 1619 to Present” which maps the visual flow of artistic, cultural, social, and political change in America from 1619 to the present day.

Saturday, July 13 @ 9am - Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historic Park, Wright Dunbar Interpretive Center (16 South Williams St. Dayton, OH 45402), meet in the parking lot

-This center tells the story of Orville and Wilbur Wright and African American poet, Paul Laurence Dunbar. At this location, the Wrights edited and published newspapers and the Dayton Tattler, Dayton’s first newspaper dedicated to the African American community which was written by Paul Laurence Dunbar, was also printed at this location. Afterwards, you may choose to visit the Paul Laurence Dunbar House.

Saturday, July 27 @ 10am - SunWatch Indian Village/Archaeological Park (2301 West River Road, Dayton, OH 45417), meet in the parking lot

-SunWatch is the site of an 800-year-old partially reconstructed American Indian Village as well as a prairie with native grasses and other plants situated along the banks of the Great Miami River. SunWatch features an Interpretive Center  where we will explore exhibits and see a short video about the site before we begin exploring the village.
