According to Paul, when we choose to be baptized, we are putting our faith in the working of God that we are being buried with Christ. Our old self is being crucified with Christ, and we die to sin. We are raised up a new creature in Christ, and we are no longer slaves to sin (Col. 2:11-13; Rom. 6:3-11).

What happened to Saul on the road to Damascus?
1 point
Clear selection
We learn from Paul’s conversion (Acts 9; 22; 26) that he believed in Jesus after being blinded by Him. He obeyed Jesus by going to Damascus and waiting for further instructions. We find Saul praying and fasting for three days. It’s also obvious that he repented. Now, if anyone could have been saved through belief alone or by saying a prayer it would have been Saul, but we learn that he was still in his sins after doing all these things because Ananias told him that he must get himself baptized to wash away his sins (Acts 22:16). Paul was not saved until his sins were washed away, which was at the point of baptism.

If we put all this all together, we learn that we cannot be saved without God’s grace, but we must hear the Word of God and what it says about Jesus and salvation. If we believe, then we should be willing to repent and confess Jesus as our Lord. We should also be willing to be water baptized knowing that when we put our faith in the working of God that we are being buried with Christ, and our sins are being washed away. We receive the gift of the Holy Spirit, and we are added to the church by God.

Please look back at what you wrote about how you were saved. Does your conversion match what we have learned from Scripture? If it does, that is great. However, if you said the sinner’s prayer or asked Jesus into your heart, which are not found in Scripture, or you thought you were saved before your baptism, then you have not obeyed God’s plan of salvation. Now that you know the truth, are you ready to obey the gospel by believing, repenting, confessing, and being baptized into Christ?
