Sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (USDOT) Intelligent Transportation Systems Joint Program Office (ITS JPO), the Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program is a national effort to deploy, test, and operationalize cutting-edge mobile and roadside technologies and enable multiple connected vehicle applications. These innovative technologies and applications have the potential for immediate beneficial impacts – to save lives, improve personal mobility, enhance economic productivity, reduce negative environmental impacts, and transform public agency operations.

The USDOT awarded three cooperative agreements collectively worth more than $45 million to initiate the design/build/test/deploy Connected Vehicle Pilot Deployment Program to three agencies: Wyoming Department of Transportation (WYDOT), New York City Department of Transportation (NYCDOT), and Tampa Hillsborough Expressway Authority (THEA). From September 2015 to September 2016, each site prepared a comprehensive deployment concept to ensure a rapid and efficient connected vehicle capability roll-out. Since 2016, the sites have worked to design, build, and test these deployments of integrated wireless in-vehicle, mobile device, and roadside technologies.

The NYCDOT CV Pilot is now ready to enter the operational phase, in which the tested system will be placed into operational practice, maintained in good working order, and monitored on a set of key performance metrics to measure its impact.

This session will share how the NYCDOT CV Pilot conducted a series of coordinated tests and demonstrations to ensure the operational readiness of their connected vehicle system. Representatives from the NYCDOT CV Pilot will provide an overview of their approach to demonstrate that the deployed system operates as designed in a safe and secure manner. The session will also share baseline performance measures and security-related lessons learned from the tests and demonstrations.
