All across the community, we have heard demands for the city to make proactive initiatives in divesting public funding away from the Bellevue Police Department and into community health and safety programs, things that safeguard and facilitate accessible housing, COVID relief, anti-violence programs, universal childcare, investment into black and brown businesses etc.
Our community has decided that safety begins when people have a roof over their hands, have healthcare, have food in their mouths, not at policing. To that end, we demand:
1. We call for the immediate re-allocation of public funds from the Bellevue police department into health and safety initiatives such as secure/affordable housing, COVID-19 relief, anti-violence programs, universal childcare, and investment into black and brown communities to name a few.
2. We demand that the City of Bellevue and Bellevue school district make a commitment to hiring more black educators, ending the relationship between the Bellevue Police Department (BPD) and school district, and re-constructing a more inclusive history curriculum.
3. On Juneteenth, we ask mayor Lynne Robinson, the head of BPD, City Council members, and the school District Board to receive our demands in a meeting with community organizers, leaders and educators.
