The COVID19 pandemic limited opportunities for senior medical students to gain exposure to the field of anesthesiology through away rotations or interviews. This "Virtual Pre-Op Call," opportunity was created in an effort to offer an interactive educational experience for interested medical students as well as provide an opportunity to learn more about institutional culture through an open Q&A with a program's trainees and faculty.
Our proposed Learning Objectives are:
1. Facilitate active group collaboration among fourth year medical students and teaching faculty, fellows, or residents, in working through pre-operative cases.
2. Discuss important components of pre-operative evaluation and clinical considerations contributing to anesthetic and perioperative plan.
3. Explore anesthetic management for typical cases anesthesiologists encounter.
4. Establish a better understanding of individual institution/program teaching methodology and overall culture.
As a resident/fellow/faculty mentor, we invite you to sign up to host a "Virtual Pre-op Call" with a couple of medical students on a single case, based on an oral board format.
The format is a 1.5 hour session with the following breakdown:
Introduction (5 min)
Breakout room 1 with 3 students/preceptor (55 min) - introductions, preop portion with anesthetic plan + intraop/postop considerations and scenarios
Moderated Q&A with all preceptors (~4) (30 min) *Recorded
