Biodiversity Challenge - Excursions
The Faculty of Bioscience Engineering at Ghent University is participating in the ICA 2024 Biodiversity Challenge by conducting a survey of the Aelmoeseneie forest. This ancient forest patch, owned by UGent and management by the ForNaLab research group, covers about 30 hectares and has been a hotspot for scientific research and student training for many decades. The research mainly focuses on forest plants, but a wide variety of other taxa has also been studied to a lesser extent. With the ICA challenge, Ghent University aims to get a better idea of the organisms living in their forest. In 2024 trapping campaigns and excursions (in Dutch) will be organized to sample as much biota as possible, from plants to mushrooms, bees, beetles, springtails, and many more, to grasp the total biodiversity of this extraordinary forest. In addition, we want to involve as many students and staff from the Faculty, as well as other interested stakeholders, to collaborate. The goal is to identify at least 2000 species in one year, which is ambitious but achievable with the help of numerous volunteers and experts.
