Spring '25 Effective Altruism Intro Program Application(Metropolitan area)
This form takes approximately 10 minutes to fill in.

The Effective Altruism Intro Program is an intensive and rewarding 5-week program to deeply engage with ideas & strategies for effectively improving the world. Participants will combine the head and the heart as they apply rigor and rationality to questions regarding morality and altruism. We're especially excited about participants who will not be content with only doing some good, and instead have the ambition and drive to do the most good they can.

What does the Intro Program consist of?

- Weekly readings and group discussions
- Interaction with an experienced member of the Finnish EA community
- Philosophical inquiry and career planning
- Opportunities to engage with EA beyond the end of the Intro Program

In order to get the most out of this program, Effective Altruism Intro Program participants are:

- Passionate about helping others
- Driven to do as much good as they can
- Excited to dedicate their career to doing good and/or to donate a portion of their income to charity
- Open-minded and flexible, eager to discuss challenging ideas
- Available to attend group discussions and able to commit ~3-4 hours per week between the weeks 9-13

The application deadline is the end of day on TUESDAY, February 10th.

The application process consists of this application and a possible brief (15 min) interview between weeks 6 an 7 in English. We recommend that you save your answers to an external document in case this form malfunctions.

What factors are important to you when choosing a career? How much does having a positive impact on the world affect your choice? (~3 mins) *
Read this text:
Worldview #1
The decision of which cause to work on is a matter of personal preference - whether you should focus on education, climate change, or the arts should be decided by which cause you are most passionate about.

Worldview #2
Suppose that you have the choice between a summer placement at two non-profit organizations. The first is close to your heart: providing disadvantaged children in your local community with access to free music lessons. The second is further from your existing interests: helping with the logistics for a mosquito bed net distribution program that could prevent dozens of additional cases of malaria with your work. It seems like even if you had a personal attachment to the first cause, you wouldn't have sufficient reason to focus on it rather than the anti-malaria bed nets. So the decision of which cause to work on should not be determined by what you are most passionate about.
How do the two worldviews described above compare? Does one seem more appealing than the other, or could they fit together in some cohesive way? (~5 mins) *
If you have engaged with the Effective Altruism (EA) movement in any way previously, please briefly describe how (e.g. attended X/Y/Z event, read the EA Forum, etc.). Otherwise, write "new to EA." *
Note: Prior engagement with the EA movement is not a requirement for admission to the EA Intro Program. We equally welcome new people to apply and do not prioritize people based on their familiarity with EA or its ideas.
