Overview:
Respiration is the process by which animals release energy from food, taking in oxygen and using it to burn food, and then eliminating waste products such as water and carbon dioxide. Different animals have different modes of respiration:
Unicellular animals
Simple diffusion occurs via the cell membrane. For example, amoeba breathe through simple diffusion.
Earthworms and other soil animals
Use their skin to absorb oxygen from the air and expel carbon dioxide.
Aquatic animals
Gills extract dissolved oxygen from water and send it to the cells of the animal. Gills are special muscles that increase the surface area for gas exchange. They are found in arthropods, annelids, fish, and amphibians.
Insects
Have a respiratory system called the tracheal system, which consists of a network of small tubes that carries oxygen to the entire body. The tracheal system is made of a polymeric material called chitin.
Land animals
Have lungs. For example, humans, birds, lizards, dogs, and frogs have lungs
