With public libraries and schools closed, our bookstores are one of the only remaining sources of informational, educational, and entertainment materials for Washingtonians staying home. But with Governor Inslee's stay-at-home order, bookstores are facing a tough reality: try to weather the pandemic—or go out of business.

Restaurants, grocery stores, marijuana stores, hardware stores, coffee shops, and more have been able to adapt their business models to serve their communities while also observing crucial public health limitations. We want bookstores to at least have that option, too. If we don’t act swiftly and decisively, Seattle and Washington could lose independent bookstores, and our literary community could take years to recover.  

That's why Seattle City of Literature is setting a goal of 500 signatures before midnight asking Governor Inslee to reclassify bookstores as essential. With hours to go, we're falling way short of our goal and we're counting on this community to make their voices heard before it's too late:
