2020-2021 MAPS: Machine Learning and Physical Sciences Trainee Application Form
Deadline for application materials: 5pm Friday, July 24th 2020

MAPS is a graduate training program at the University of California, Irvine involving the School of Information and Computer Sciences and the School of Physical Sciences, with a focus on machine learning and statistical techniques applied to data-driven scientific research. This program has been funded as part of the US National Science Foundation Research Traineeship (NRT) with additional support from the UCI Graduate Division.  For further information on the MAPS program, please see http://maps-nsf.uci.edu.

Program requirements are found here: http://maps-nsf.uci.edu/requirements_July2020.pdf

Eligibility: US citizens, permanent residents, and international students are eligible to participate in the MAPS training program.  Students from groups traditionally under-represented in science and engineering are especially encouraged to apply.  Please note that majority of the fellowships are restricted to US citizens and permanent residents.  Both Ph.D. and M.S. students are encouraged to apply, however, M.S. students can only be appointed as honorary (unfunded) fellows.

Fellowship support is $36,000 annually (paid $3,000 monthly in arrears) plus graduate fees.  The MAPS program anticipates awarding approximately 4 to 6 new fellowship awards starting in Fall 2020.  MAPS fellowship appointment will be for one year, from September 2020 to August 2021.

Application and ALL additional documents must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020.

Please provide a description of your research plan for the next 12 months (500 words or less).  You should describe clearly how your research will span both (a) physical sciences and (b) statistics or machine learning.  If you already have preliminary/existing results for your research, please feel free to reference this information, e.g., links to preprints or papers. *
Please describe specifically the role of your secondary advisor in your project (300 words or less).  Is this a new proposed collaboration or an existing collaboration?  Note that since these are 1-year awards, existing collaborations are more likely to be funded given that it will be challenging to establish meaningful new collaborations and get research done within 12 months.  If it's an existing collaboration, please provide some details on the nature of the collaboration with the secondary advisor (e.g., how often do you meet, number of research meetings in the past year, preliminary research results, papers in preparation or published, presentations, etc).
Summarize your future career plans (200 words or less) *
Personal Statement-why would you like to be involved in the MAPS Training Program (200 words or less) *
Other Requirements
Please email your current CV and unofficial graduate transcript to Ms. Janet Ko at jko@uci.edu.

Finally, applicants should request that their advisor email a reference letter to Ms. Janet Ko at jko@uci.edu.  The advisor must include a statement recommending your participation in the program.

Please have your secondary advisor send an email to Ms. Ko indicating both (a) their willingness to advise during your participation in the program, and (b) confirming that they have read your application and commit to participating in the proposed research, and (c) briefly outlining what their role will be in your proposed 1-year research plan.

ALL documents must be received by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, July 24, 2020.

Applicants will be notified with a decision about their application before mid August 2020.
