Student Lifestyle Covenant
Island Encounters is a Christian community committed to the obedience of the commands of God our Father under the Lordship of Jesus Christ. This community cares for the development of our members and for the mission of Christ’s kingdom in the world. Further, we represent Him individually and collectively. As such, we attempt to evaluate our lives by Scriptural measures rather than cultural standards and as members of this community, we covenant to actively engage in the pursuit of personal holiness by obedience to Scriptural teaching. This obedience will benefit not only ourselves, but our community, and our witness to a watching world.

More specifically, we covenant to obey the nation’s laws by which we are subject under God’s authority. We also willingly and voluntarily subject ourselves to the authority of the IE Student Program’s leaders, to the benefit of ourselves and the community to which we are joining. Further, due to culture considerations (where you are coming from and where you are seeking to serve), we emphasize for clarity and understanding a commitment to:

o Sexual Purity - To avoid certain practices, including, but not limited to, fornication, sexual promiscuity, adultery, pornography, any form of sexual misconduct and homosexual acts.

o Upright Speech – To speak truthfully, avoid gossip and to refrain from the use of obscene language and profanity. This includes abusive words and actions: including hazing, threats of violence or discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender or physical trait.

o Self Control – To be exemplary in personal habits, refraining from activities such as the use of illegal drugs or narcotics not legally authorized by a physician.

o Removing Stumbling Blocks – The culture to which you are seeking to serve views these below as worldly and not consistent with those whom proclaim Christ. As such, we seek to avoid placing a stumbling block in the way of any who would come to the cross:

        - To abstain from alcohol and smoking or “vaping” as the culture to which you are seeking to serve views these as worldly and not consistent with those whom proclaim Christ.

       - To dress modestly at all times. (i.e. no revealing or form fitting clothes, low cut shirts, no short skirts or shorts).

     - To abstain from exclusive relationships while within the IE Student Program. Exceptions are possible with approval from IE staff, Ex. – Married couples, pre-existing relationships (even then, we will emphasize the need to avoid exclusivity)

For the good of the community as a whole, we voluntarily submit ourselves to the accountability of others in the community as part of our covenanted life together. If we find ourselves unable to honor this covenant, withdrawal may be in order. We also recognize that appropriate action will be taken to teach, discipline or even dismiss those who disregard this covenanted agreement, at the student’s expense.

With earnest hope for a community that honors and represents our Lord Jesus, we seek God’s plan for life together: “As God’s chosen people, holy and dearly loved, clothe yourselves with compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness and patience. Bear with each other and forgive whatever grievances you may have against one another. And over all these virtues put on love, which binds them all together in perfect unity. And whatever you do, whether in word or deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God.” (Colossians 3:12-17).
